As our global footprint continues to spread across the world, we are looking for a Data Science Intern to join our team in Northbrook, IL or Chicago, IL.
This role is hybrid - 3 days a week on-site at the Northbrook or Chicago Office.
Responsibilities
As a Data Science Intern, you will work within one of the following operating units.
Business Transformation
The TIC (Testing, Inspection & Certification) Business Transformation Team works in partnership with all UL Solutions' COUs and enterprise functions to provide a better customer and employee experience and implement digital strategy for TIC to lead the industry. The team leads and supports process improvement across the segment, to simplify the processes, improve efficiency using Lean Six Sigma tools, and implement automation while fostering the culture of continuous improvement.
We provide visibility with KPIs to monitor the health of the operations and enable the right decision making and improve profitability. We enable the execution of last mile of all the enterprise digital initiatives, improving the usability of the current digital platforms working closely with the Innovation and Technology team. The team leads and supports strategic projects across the enterprise and workstreams to bring alpha operating models to life.
Global & Strategic Accounts (G&SA)
The G&SA Team partners closely with UL’s most significant global customers and internal business units to deliver exceptional customer experience and drive enterprise-level growth. G&SA relies extensively on deep customer insights, market research, and data‑driven analysis to understand emerging customer needs, industry trends, and where UL can create differentiated value.
Through this continuous analysis and research, we monitor key performance indicators and assess the overall health of the G&SA customer portfolio, enabling informed decision-making, proactive risk management, and targeted strategies that support sustainable growth
Work with large, complex datasets from multiple enterprise systems to support analytics
Perform data analysis to identify customer trends and insights using internal and external data sources
Assist in cleaning, structuring, and standardizing engineering and product-related data (including identifying key engineering terms and attributes from structured and unstructured sources).
Support the development of dashboards, KPI reporting, and data summaries for leadership decision-making.
Conduct market research and competitive benchmarking to identify industry trends, digital capabilities, and best practices.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Sales, Commercial excellence, Engineering, operations, IT, business transformation) to translate business questions into analytical outputs.
Document findings clearly and present insights in a structured, business-ready format.

Qualifications
Rising senior currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in: Data Science, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
Ability to work with large datasets and structured/unstructured data.
Strong attention to detail and ability to communicate findings clearly.
Demonstrates a self‑starter mindset, taking initiative to shape project scopes creatively and drive outcomes independently
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and extract insights
Experience with data analysis tools and software (e.g., PBI, SQL, Python, Excel)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Indefinite right to work in the United States

Total Rewards: The hourly rate for this role is $25.00. Qualified candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus to assist with housing, travel, and other relocation expenses, subject to terms and conditions. Your internship will consist of a 10-12 week long project, networking, learning & development opportunities, and will provide you with the opportunity to make a real world impact.
