The Hartford is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our growing Technology Team.
Role Responsibilities: Accountable for technical leadership and engineering outcomes across platforms, shared services, and customer-facing capabilities spanning multiple applications, products, and technology domains. Lead end-to-end solution delivery across multiple technologies, platforms, and integrations while ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable. Provide technical leadership supporting contact center technologies across voice, chat, email, messaging, self-service, and related customer engagement capabilities.
Design, develop, and support cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS services and modern software engineering practices. Build and implement capabilities for continuous integration, continuous delivery, infrastructure automation, and DevSecOps practices aligned with Enterprise standards. Lead the implementation and adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) utilizing AWS CDK and CloudFormation. Define and promote software engineering standards, development practices, architecture patterns, source code management strategies, branching models, and quality governance processes.
Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, and engineering governance activities to ensure solutions meet enterprise security, resiliency, operational, and performance standards. Establish reusable engineering patterns, frameworks, and platform capabilities that improve consistency, scalability, and development efficiency across teams. Partner with Product Owners, Architects, Engineering Leaders, and business stakeholders to translate business objectives into scalable technical solutions.
Drive continuous improvement of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, environment management, observability, monitoring, and deployment automation practices. Mentor engineers and technical leads while fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning. Collaborate across teams to resolve complex technical challenges, influence technical direction, and drive engineering alignment across the organization. Provide thought leadership through root cause analysis, architectural guidance, technical strategy, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Promote adoption of modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and secure-by-design development methodologies. Desired Experience: Possesses 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams, products, or strategic initiatives. Experience designing and implementing cloud-native solutions utilizing AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, KMS, SNS/SQS, and related technologies.
Development experience in TypeScript and modern software engineering practices. Experience with Node.js, Java, or Python is a plus. Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using AWS CDK and CloudFormation. Experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise CI/CD solutions and software delivery pipelines utilizing GitHub, Jenkins, or equivalent DevOps platforms. Experience with event-driven architectures, serverless computing, and distributed application design.
Experience supporting highly available, resilient, mission-critical customer-facing platforms in production environments. Experience leading architecture discussions, technical design reviews, code reviews, and engineering governance activities. Experience establishing engineering standards, reusable patterns, and software development best practices across multiple teams. Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership in Agile delivery environments.
Experience driving platform modernization, infrastructure automation, observability, resiliency, and operational excellence initiatives. Experience collaborating with Product Owners, Architects, Engineering Leaders, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable technology solutions. Experience with customer engagement platforms, customer experience technologies, or contact center ecosystems strongly preferred. Experience with Amazon Connect, Genesys Cloud, NICE CXone, Five9, Cisco Contact Center, or similar contact center technologies is a plus.
AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect, Developer, DevOps Engineer, or Amazon Connect certification preferred. This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
