About NLR

NLR (National Laboratory of the Rockies) is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, conducting multidisciplinary research in renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy systems integration, and sustainable transportation. It serves the DOE and broader energy research community from campuses in Golden and Arvada, Colorado, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Founded in 1974 as the Solar Energy Research Institute (later NREL), the lab was renamed National Laboratory of the Rockies in December 2025 and is operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy.
