Overview
The Product Research team helps GitHub build tools and experiences that support the future of software development. We study how people work, what they need, and the context around their teams and organizations so product teams can make better decisions.
We are looking for a User Researcher to support research on defined product features and customer problems. In partnership with experienced researchers and cross-functional teams, you will help plan and conduct studies, synthesize customer evidence, and communicate findings that improve product decisions and user experience.
Responsibilities
Partner with researchers, product managers, designers, and engineers to clarify research questions, target customers, product decisions, and learning goals for a defined feature or problem.
Review relevant existing research, customer feedback, and product data; summarize what is known and identify gaps with guidance from a research lead.
Help prepare end-to-end study plans, including participant criteria, discussion guides or test materials, recruiting needs, methods, timelines, and success measures.
Conduct assigned research activities, such as interviews, usability sessions, prototype evaluations, surveys, and product walkthroughs, following established research practices and receiving regular guidance.
Organize and analyze qualitative and quantitative evidence; identify recurring patterns, distinguish evidence from assumptions, note limitations, and develop findings and recommendations for review.
Share clear, concise readouts and customer stories with the immediate product team, using appropriate formats such as presentations, written summaries, clips, or annotated examples.
Contribute customer context to feature decisions, experience improvements, and team discussions about user needs, adoption, engagement, and usability.
Support iterative research and evaluation with cross-disciplinary teams, including heuristic reviews, journey mapping, ideation, and follow-up studies as the product evolves.
Help maintain research materials and reusable templates, and support participant recruiting or customer-learning activities as assigned.
Communicate risks, changes in scope, and questions that need researcher or stakeholder input early; incorporate feedback into research plans and deliverables.
